WATERTOWN — A record-breaking 808 participants took to the streets for the Watertown Family YMCA’s 35th Annual Shamrock Run on March 16 as part of the North Country Goes Green Irish Festival.
Among the runners were many from Carthage, Black River and Lowwille along with Nola Pominville of Copenhagen.
Ms. Pominville, 27, finished 31st overall with a time of 25.24, placing fourth for the female runners and first in the age 20-29 female division.
At age 11, she ran her first 5K which was hosted by the Beaver Falls Library. Since that time, she has run “too many 5 and 10 Ks to count, more than 20 half marathons, two full marathons and two ultramarathons — a 50k and a 50 mile.
“I have run the Shamrock Run almost every year for the past 13 years,” Ms. Pominville said. “I compete in lots of local races, but my favorite is the 1812 half marathon and I really enjoyed the inaugural Sackets Harbor half marathon this past fall. I am registered for the 1812 half marathon coming up this spring and I plan on running the full marathon this fall at the Sackets Harbor race weekend.”
She said she continues to register for races to stay motivated.
“Races also give me an adrenaline rush I love,” the runner said. “I train pushing my daughter, Olive, 2, in her stroller and on my Nordictrack treadmill. I have always enjoyed running and the feel of being strong. It’s always fun to try to beat my own times. My fastest 5K is 19:50 and I’d like to beat that again soon.”
Ms. Pominville has been a registered nurse at Lewis County General Hospital for four years.
Carthage runners led the pack for this year’s Shamrock Run veteran runner James Brady, 55, won the race with a time of 19.16 followed by Jenny Metzler, 28, in 19.56.
